Background & Experience
Alan moved to Eugene in 1971. His first work experience in Eugene was as a tree planter, where after one 20 inch rain month, he rather quickly decided that there had to be a better way. He bought a small restaurant in 1972 and worked 60 hour weeks for the next two years. He learned a lot about business (and a little bit about cooking too), made almost no money and decided that there had to be a better way. He then worked for Lane County as a grant writer/analyst and within a few years was completely bored and decided there had to be a better way. He got into real estate in 1978 on the residential side and by chance closed a commercial sale in 1981. He immediately decided this was what he wanted to do and spent a few years learning and transitioning. Sue Prichard approached him about forming a partnership in 1986 and the rest is history.
